About
Mandate
Our mandate is to promote an awareness and understanding of Aboriginal cultures to all interested people in Manitoba.
Structure
The corporation is managed by a Board of Directors. The board consists of: Southern Grand Chief Morris J. Swan Shannacappo, Chairperson; Chief Glenn Hudson, Treasurer; and Lorne Cochrane, Secretary.
Community Involvement
Over the years, as a charitable organization, MICEC has assisted a number of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations in a variety of capacities. Some of these include the Tommy Prince Memorial Fund, the Aboriginal Circle of Educators, the North Point Douglas Women’s Centre, as well as the Aboriginal Broadcast Training Initiative. Over the past 10 years, we have also built a close partnership with Aboriginal Languages of Manitoba Inc. This partnership is complementary due to our similar mandates. Some other relationships include the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretative Centre, the Manitoba Museum, Manitoba Advanced Education and Training, the Millennium Library, the River East/Transcona School Division, and the University of Manitoba to name a few.
The Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre currently has one annual fundraiser. MICEC has been hosting the MICEC Aboriginal Minor Hockey Tournament since 1988. Approximately 600 youth from across Manitoba come together, along with their family and friends, to participate in this event. The funds raised from this event contribute directly to heritage programming.
