People's Library
The Centre operates a unique Resource Library and Information Centre relating to the First Nation Peoples of Manitoba as well as other Indigenous Peoples of North America.
Our resource centre has a substantial collection of books, publications, films, educational kits, audio-visual tapes, music, art and handicrafts inherent to the Aboriginal Peoples of North America.
As the only library in the immediate area, we provide services to the Point Douglas community. However, our target group is anyone interested in Aboriginal history and culture. Due to the nature of our collection, the majority of our users are students, teachers and researchers. Current library services include: access to the collection, borrowing privileges and photocopying services. Following the completion of the project we will be expanding our collection to attract more young adults and children. We will also be increasing our library hours to better accommodate the needs of our patrons.
Our Heritage Collection includes over 300 items in a variety of contemporary and traditional forms. These include: art (paintings, drawings, sculptures, carvings, etc.), craftwork (baskets and beadwork) and medicines. The artifacts comprise of tools (arrowheads, scraping tools, fish hooks, axes, mallets, etc.), regalia, drums and clothing. The safety and preservation of our collection is an important objective of our project.
