Welcome to MICEC

Hello! Aaniin! Boozhoo! Ho/Han! Tanshi! Tansi! Tungasugit! Wotziye!

MICEC is a provincial, not-for-profit, charitable and educational organization that works to promote awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture for all Manitobans.

MICEC was founded in 1975 by the Winnipeg Indian Council in conjunction with the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood. It had become more and more apparent that First Nations people needed to proactively work to reclaim their cultures, languages and education.

We are managed by a Board of Directors. We receive funding under the Cultural Education Centre Program and are part of the First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centres.

Promoting awareness and understanding of Indigenous

MICEC is the largest cultural education centre in Manitoba where anyone can learn about Indigenous peoples, cultures and languages in Manitoba. MICEC has 3 program areas: The People's Library, The Heritage Collection and the Community Connections Program.

The main space features a large display area with hundreds of artifacts and works of art. A mezzanine level houses more than 14,000 books and a unique children's reading area.

There are many programs and services happening throughout the year, giving the Indigenous and non-Indigenous community a wonderful opportunity to learn about many different Indigenous cultures.
