Position Summary
The Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre Inc. (MICEC) is seeking a qualified youth (aged 15-30) to support the Collections team. This is a full-time summer term position for 12 weeks (June 8, 2026 - August 28, 2026), 40 hours per week. Regular office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and may include occasional evenings and weekends.
Under the supervision of the MICEC Collections Manager, the Archaeology Collections Technician will support the short-term and long-term preservation and care of the Archeological Collection at the Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre. The Centre's current focus for the Archaeology collections is to finalize the preparation of the modular "community kits". The Technician will work with the Collections Manager to develop concrete plans and modular strategies to prepare the collection for future community and/or school-based activities revolving around the archaeology collection.
Additional activities may also include: cataloguing and photographing the collection, accessioning and de-accessioning items, keeping databases updated, monitoring temperature and humidity in the collections and exhibit areas, conducting minor conservation when needed, aiding with program budgets and funding applications, training other staff and volunteers, and providing access of the museum collections to the community. In addition to caring for the collection, the Archaeology Assistant will work with MICEC collections consultants to research and document the Archaeological Collection at MICEC.
Skills and responsibilities (in no particular order):
- Willingness to learn and operate collection equipment (software, audio and video recording equipment, photography studio lighting and equipment) at MICEC to facilitate record keeping and data entry.
- Cataloguing and photographing artifacts and scanning relevant contextual information. Must use proper lighting and photo editing techniques (on-site training available);
- Print, organize, and distribute all pre-made artifact cards;
- Prepare condition reports as needed (on-site training available);
- Work with collections team to research and develop community kit documentation and user guides;
- Provide progress reports and/or presentations as requested;
- Monitor and maintain a safe work area;
- Train and support employees or volunteers as needed;
- Be familiar with important cultural aspects of MICEC;
- Reporting regularly on accomplishments and participating as part of the MICEC team.
Essential Qualifications
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Have knowledge of or interest in Indigenous cultures, Indigenous traditional or contemporary skills, Indigenous languages and/or program development and delivery
Preferred Experience
- Minimum of secondary diploma and interest in museum studies, collections management, archaeology, or equivalent work experience;
- Experience in collections management and/or archaeological or ethnological cataloguing. Must be familiar with handling artifacts and sensitive objects;
- Moderate to extensive knowledge of Indigenous languages, cultures and people including Manitoba archaeological history required;
- Ability to speak, read, write and/or understand an Indigenous language an asset;
- Detail-oriented and able to accurately record information;
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and function as part of a team;
- Familiarity with collections management software (ideally PastPerfect) is an asset;
- Familiarity with photo-editing software (Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Canvas, and/or GIMP) an asset;
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in data entry and experience with Microsoft office programs; and
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
